More market surveillance highlighted as one possible pathway to ensuring a greater level of product safety


Stakeholders seeking to further improve product safety for European consumers via increased market surveillance could push for the establishment of a European-level fund to promote EU-wide market surveillance.

This was one of the suggestions to come out of the "working together on product safety" Work4Safety workshop on 11th February 2011.

According to a Commission representative however, securing the necessary funds to achieve this
at a time of belt tightening would be tough and additional avenues were also worth exploring.

Nevertheless the Workshop heard that a specific joint industry/consumer proposal, aimed at securing financing for market surveillance, could be drawn up.

Work4Safety was organised by CECED and brought together over 60 key stakeholders from industry, consumer organisations, standardisation and market surveillance bodies.
